The dental community began using nitrous oxide in the 1860’s to calm anxious patients. This colorless gas is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through the nose by breathing normally. Your child will be able to hear and respond to questions and instructions during the procedure. They can simply sit back, relax, and breathe comfortably through their nose while we take care of their smile.
With oral sedation, we prescribe a pill to take an hour before an upcoming visit, and depending on the dosage, it can range from minimal to moderate sedation. They may be drowsy, even though they will still be awake, although some people become groggy enough at the moderate level and can nod off during the procedure. They will, however, be easily awakened with a gentle shake.
With IV sedation, we administer the medication through the veins. This type of sedation works quickly, and allows us to control the level of sedation which makes one remain comfortable and pain-free. While IV sedation allows one to remain conscious, they may feel so relaxed that they fall asleep during their treatment. They also may not remember the details of their procedure, even though they are awake.
