Teething is a common condition that all children must face as they grow up. Our teeth are an integral part of our oral health, but they are grown underneath your gum line until they reach maturity and must erupt through the gums. Unfortunately, this process of breaking through the gum lines can be discomforting to your child, and potentially painful. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to help them.
When your child begins to teethe, they will often show signs that something is wrong. Beyond just feeling inside their mouth for any teeth that have broken through, look for signs of discomfort in your child by monitoring their emotions. They may begin to be more fussy than normal and display an overall sense of extreme irritability. They may also drool more than usual and tend to have trouble sleeping. These are normal signs of teething, but if they begin to worsen and lead to fevers or rashes, you should consult your pediatrician.
Never give your child teething tablets or other forms of medication for their pain unless directed so by their pediatrician. Better solutions include products for your child to chew on, or products designed to help decrease pain. This includes teething rings, cold objects such as spoons, and even your finger if it is clean.
